At Tomio Maruyama near Nara, archaeologists uncovered an iron sword more than two metres long from a fourth-century burial mound. A rare shield-shaped mirror lay in the same mound. Its size suggests that this was never an ordinary weapon. Whoever placed it underground wanted it to mean something long after they were gone.
