Watch as slicing this bolete mushroom turns from yellow to blue in a matter of seconds. The blue-staining bolete undergoes a process of oxidation which causes the vibrant yellow color into a deep blue color. This process is typically referred as brusing of the mushroom. #themoreyouknow #nature #foraging #boletus #boletemushroom

Check out this blue staining Bolete I found with my friend Warren Cardimona. Not totally sure on ID, but it’s probably a Bitter Bolete #Caloboletus. .The blue staining of this mushroom is caused by an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of organic acids in the mushroom flesh. While this is a common reaction in many Bolete species, we don’t entire understand the reason why. The blue staining is not a robust way of determining edibility (Rubroboletus are poisonous, but Butyriboletus are not). Calo

Once cut open, a rubroboletus species will rapidly oxidize and turn blue. In general, blue-staining red-pored boletes should be avoided for consumption. #FungusFriday 🍄 by Woodland Cravings | Science Channel

As a follow up to the Satan’s Bolete, here is another blue staining red-pored bolete. This is the #LiverBolete or #Suillellusamygdalinus, a mycorrhizal species that I often see fruiting early fall through late winter into spring. Primarily I see this in association with coast live oak, but also with other oaks, madrone, and manzanita. It has a reddish brown cap, red-orange pores, and granular dots on the stem (but not true reticulation/webbing). The pores and flesh will quickly stain a deep dark

So cool to watch this Red Stemmed Bitter Bolete (Caloboletus rubripes) turn blue when you bruise the pores or expose the flesh to oxygen. The blue staining is due to enzymatic oxidation of organic acids in the flesh of the mushroom, not due to active tryptamines. .Caloboletus are not toxic, but they are very bitter so usually people do not consume them as food. I have friends who have use them in cocktail bitters - interesting application. ..#slicingasmr #caloboletus #mycology #bluestainingbolet

Blue colors are relatively rare in nature, but there are a significant number of mushrooms that are blue or stain blue. Some mushrooms contain azulene, an unstable blue pigments. Boletes contain an organic acid that turns blue when the tissue is injured. Ps!locybe mushrooms turn blue when a particular tryptamine is oxidized. This cool color change is due to the oxidation of compounds in the Bolete that turn blue when exposed to air. How neat is that? #mycology #boletes #mushroomeducation #mushtok #foraging | Fungi Perfecti

Reveling in New England summer I cut open this beautiful Bolete to see the brilliant yellow flesh quickly stain a dark blue. Not to be confused with a Bicolor Bolete, I’m pretty sure this is #Boletuspseudosensibilis or #Lanmaoapseudosensibilis, a mycorrhizal species that grows in association Oaks and possibly other hardwoods in Eastern North America. I tend to find this species with a light reddish/pink cap than turns a darker yellow/brown with age. The stem/stipe has some red blush to it (simil

Beaten and bruised from the week? So are these members of Boletaceae family — these mushrooms turn blue when cut or bruised. This bluing reaction is not due to the presence of psychoactive alkaloids (as is the case for Psilocybe). These boletes turn blue due to the oxidation of variegatic acidm which is red in it's reduced form. When the fungal cells are damaged, variegatic acid is enzymatically oxidized to its quinone methide form which is blue. #FungusFriday 🍄 🎥 caption by Gordon Walker (Fas

Lanmaoa pseudosensibilis, edibility not recommended. When cut or injured, the flesh of this bolete stains blue. The reaction is due to the enzymatic oxidation of organic acids (variegatic acid). The blue color is pH sensitive, so when I add basic potassium hydroxide, the flesh turns orange. I love how pretty the colors look in the afternoon light. . . #lanmaoa #bolete #bluestainingbolete #biochemstry #sciencetok
