Instead, whispers say that the weary monarch slipped away from the suffocating weight of court intrigue and endless responsibility, choosing instead a life of anonymity in the frozen stillness of Siberia. There he is believed to have lived as a hermit known as Feodor Kuzmich, a mysterious holy man who emerged years after the emperor’s supposed death. Feodor possessed an uncanny educa
