Former Oakland mayor indicted on bribery charges
SAN FRANCISCO — Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted on federal bribery charges. The U.S. attorney’s office unveiled the indictment Friday morning in downtown San Francisco. Prosecutors allege that Thao promised to extend the contract of a recycling company in exchange for financial benefits.

Sheng Thao, who was recalled by voters in the California city in November, said last year that she had done nothing wrong after the F.B.I. raided her home.

News of the indictment was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, which broke the story Thursday. The same day, officials from the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Attorney’s Office said they planned to announce the results of a “significant law enforcement action” at a news conference.
