A federal judge in west Texas has joined other courts in temporarily blocking the deportations of Venezuelan immigrants under an 18th century wartime law cited by the Trump administration, known as the Alien Enemies Act.

One judge accused the Trump administration of drastic and un-American tactics in its removal of migrants. “This is not the Inquisition,” he said.

The Supreme Court early Saturday morning paused the deportation of immigrants potentially subject to the Alien Enemies Act, freezing action in a fast-developing case involving a group of immigrants in Texas who say the Trump administration was working to remove them.
