Over 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, including nearly a million Jews. On the day of liberation 80 years ago, only 7,000 were saved.

In the half a century since I’d been in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, I had never once told anyone about it in any sort of detail. I didn’t realise it at the time, but this physical reaction was my body’s way of trying to cope with processing what happened to me all those years ago.
