For every 100,000 Louisianians, 406 were the victim of a violent crime and 1,758 were the victim of a property crime. But state capital Baton Rouge had a murder rate of 36 per 100,000 in 2024, and New Orleans had a murder rate of 31 per 100,000—both of which are considerably higher than Washington’s homicide rate.
At least two Tennessee cities had higher rates of violent and property crime than Washington, D.C., last year. Memphis reported 15,338 violent crimes last year, including 249 cases of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, according to the FBI's Crime Data Explorer. The city also recorded 42,305 property crimes.
The Republican governors of West Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee announced they will send National Guard troops to Washington, DC, in an escalation of President Donald Trump’s efforts to federally take over law enforcement in the city.
