The Yankees added an arm to their organizational depth Wednesday, swinging a trade with the Chicago Cubs for minor-league right-hander Michael Arias.

Arias signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs in January 2021 and immediately switched to pitching. He had his best season in ‘21 with a 3.09 ERA, 22 strikeouts and 14 walks in 23.1 innings for the Dominican Summer League Cubs. For his career, Arias has pitched to a 4.25 ERA with 227 strikeouts and 135 walks in 182 innings.

In order to make right-hander Colin Rea’s signing official Monday, the Cubs designated pitching prospect Michael Arias for assignment. Rea’s one-year deal is worth $5 million, a source confirmed, and it includes a club option for 2026. The veteran could provide depth for the Cubs both at the back end of the rotation and in the bullpen.
