Although California dairy farmers anticipated a bird flu mortality rate of less than 2%, some say between 10% and 15% of infected cattle are dying.

Sixteen human bird flu cases have been reported in the United States this year, including the two workers who tested positive in California. Fifteen of those cases were in farm workers at infected poultry or dairy farms.

California, the biggest U.S. milk-producing state, on Thursday confirmed two human cases of bird flu in people who had contact with dairy cattle infected by the virus.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday that the state is awarding 18 communities with nearly $131 million to clear homeless encampments while also providing shelter and support.

The announcement comes on the heels of criticism surrounding the lack of accountability for $24 billion in homeless already spent over the last five years.
