Kidney transplants from HIV-positive donors are now permitted by U.S. health officials. The Department of Health and Human Services made the decision on Tuesday, which is expected to reduce wait times for all patients and improve life-saving care for patients with HIV.

The United States is expanding access to organ transplants as research shows that kidney and liver transplants between donors and recipients with HIV.

The U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Tuesday that people living with HIV can now receive kidney and liver transplants from other people living with HIV. Such transplants were once restricted only to people participating in research studies.
