A district court judge in Vermont had earlier ordered that the 30-year-old doctoral student be brought to the state for hearings to determine whether she was illegally detained. Ozturk’s lawyers say her detention violates her constitutional rights, including free speech and due process.

Rümeysa Öztürk, who was arrested by ICE for writing an op-ed, must be moved from the Louisiana detention center where she’s being held to Vermont, a federal appeals court ruled. The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Öztürk must be detained in Vermont while a federal judge determines whether to release her from ICE custody.

Rumeysa Ozturk, an international student from Turkey, was detained in Massachusetts in March and later taken to Louisiana. The ruling said she must be transferred within a week.
