The Justice Department has asked a federal appeals court to move swiftly in reversing a judge’s order that had blocked the agency from releasing any part of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigative report on Donald Trump.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who led two criminal cases against Donald Trump, has resigned. His resignation comes as Trump’s team tries to block the release of Smith’s final report about election interference.

Mr. Smith, a special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, had signaled that he would step down before Donald J. Trump’s inauguration.
