The revelation of Yubel and Jaden's connection to the Duel Spirit is one of the highlights of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX gives the protagonist a darker and more tragic backstory than fans could have anticipated.

Yubel's machinations involve manipulating Jaden's emotions, particularly his anger and hatred, to awaken the power Jaden possesses related to the Gentle Darkness.

Through it all, Yubel maintains a terrifying presence and acts as if torturing Jaden in such extreme ways is how they show their love. Yubel's backstory is filled with horrors of its own.

Jaden Yuki suffers more than any other Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonist, and it's only thanks to Yugi Muto that he's able to achieve a happy ending.

Yubel, in particular, presented one of the best moments in the anime season and toward Jaden's character arc. The anime doesn't feature these characters and offers an entirely new villain.
