Bristol, Virginia and Tennessee hosted a joint Veterans Day Parade Saturday morning on State Street. Families lined up to see marching bands from Sullivan East High School and Tennessee High School as they played patriotic music to honor those serving in the United States Military.

Also this weekend, on Sunday, Nov. 3, the Monroe County Veterans Association will be holding its Veterans Day parade. The event will begin at Stroudsburg High School at 1 p.m. with opening comments, followed by the parade at 1:15 p.m., ending at Dansbury Park in East Stroudsburg.

The O’Donnells originally hosted the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Colorado Springs from 1993 to 1999. Then the parade was taken over by Colorado Springs Veterans Day Inc. in 2000. Now, the ball is back in the O’Donnells’ court.

The theme for Petaluma’s annual Veterans Day Parade and Flyover is “A Salute to the Coast Guard,” and per tradition, will take place on Nov. 11, with various events taking place before and after the massive procession through downtown Petaluma.

The parade’s highest honoree is Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer, a Marine. According to the nonprofit United War Veterans Council, he is recognized for his valor in the Afghanistan War, in which he defied orders and went into a particularly dangerous area to help save American and Afghan troops who had gone missing, and in the Iraq War.

Communities across the state have planned parades, wreath laying ceremonies and other public programs for the Veterans Day weekend.

Observances marking Veterans Day will be held in several south and southwest suburban communities. Alsip: The village and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 450 will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans Plaza,
