Ex-central banker Mark Carney will be formally sworn in as prime minister of Canada on Friday, putting him in a position to fight tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump that could devastate the trade-dependent Canadian economy.

After Mark Carney won the Liberal leadership in a landslide on March 9, he will officially be named the 24th prime minister in Canadian history on Friday. Canadians are now awaiting announcements when a federal election will be called, widely expected to come in the next few weeks.

Canada’s Governor General, or the King of England’s representative in the country, said the ceremony would also involve the swearing-in of a new cabinet.
