(Olympics) Women's curling team takes aim at history
The sport of curling burst into the national consciousness in 2018, when the women's team led by Kim Eun-jung claimed the silver medal at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, South Korea's first medal in the sport.
The most interesting theme of the conversations was “The Choice.” Increasingly, the pursuit of curling glory in Canada involves making a very conscious choice. For most of the Scotties competitors, the choice is a difficult one: how much of your life are you willing to devote to chasing the dream of the national championship?
It might seem inelegant to yeet an iron skillet across an ice rink. But this spinoff sport has its own techniques and lingo: You can throw a turtle at the bacon, for instance.
The 25th Winter Olympics will soon be underway. That includes curling. WYSO's Jerry Kenney caught up with a local group, Curl Troy, which is working to boost the sport.
In mixed doubles tournaments, where just two curlers must work together in perfect harmony instead of the traditional four, some teams appear to have an unusual competitive edge - being married to each other.
Craig Fischer, the president and co-founder of the Fort Wayne Curling Club, has seen tremendous interest each time the Olympics rolls around.
WHITESTOWN, N.Y. -- Bob Woods, the ECHL Hall of Famer and former NHL assistant coach, has returned to the Utica area after a long career in professional hockey. Woods spent three years with the Utica Devils and recently decided to take a break from coaching in the NHL.
But as curling moved from the prairies to the cities, the object lessons the sport taught changed as well. If Mitchell’s tale is a decades-old take on the timeless tug of war between good and evil, “The New Canadian Curling Club,” a 2018 comedy by playwright Mark Crawford in which four immigrants show up for a learn-to-curl class, is a modern exploration of multiculturalism and acceptance.
