A city in Southern California has become the first in the nation to replace its police patrol cars with electric vehicles, officials announced Monday, unveiling a fleet of 20 new Teslas.

Local leaders say the new fleet of patrol and administrative vehicles ushers in a safer, more cost-effective and environmentally cleaner era.

The nation’s first all-electric police car fleet launched Monday in the Southern California city of South Pasadena, according to a news release from the city manager. The city bought 20 Teslas, installed chargers at City Hall and is putting up solar panels and a backup battery system to reduce emissions and save money,
