Qualcomm just launched the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip for smartphones today, but the second-generation Oryon CPU core within could hint at a possible new Snapdragon X Elite chip.

Now, in terms of AI support, the Snapdragon 8 Elite features a new Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) which will allow the device to run AI-related tasks 45% faster. The company is also bringing on-device multimodal Gen AI support allowing the chipset to run up to 70 tokens of Small Language Models.

The release of the Snapdragon 8 Elite will mark the most significant upgrade in Qualcomm's mobile chips since the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The Elite branding and Oryon CPU are migrating down from Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite for laptops.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is built to lengthen battery life and boost performance on upcoming premium Android phones.
