The federal government will send monitors to Harris County this year to keep an eye on how the vote is conducted in Texas’ most populous county, among many others, a far from unprecedented move, but one county GOP leaders are calling a scare tactic.

The Republican-led states of Missouri and Texas sued the U.S. Justice Department on Monday to block the federal government from sending lawyers to their states on Election Day to monitor for compliance with federal voting rights laws.

Texas’ top elections official said Friday that federal inspectors can’t be inside polls or places where ballots are counted under Texas law after the DOJ announced plans to send monitors to the state.
