President Trump got a standing ovation after addressing Israeli lawmakers following Hamas' release of all living hostages under the Gaza peace deal.
The 20 remaining living hostages were released Monday in return for almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
The talks will focus on trying to create a long-term plan for peace, and will be led by President Trump and Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The aim of the meeting is to agree on the next phase of the peace deal to try to end the war in Gaza.
The president called on Israel and Arab governments to move beyond decades of conflict and war, but he faces obstacles extending the Gaza deal to the wider region.
The vague promise of a “pathway” to Palestinian independence is reminiscent of past negotiations, when invoking the promise of an eventual Palestinian state had become a smokescreen to camouflage what was already a cruel, unjust, and explosive reality; it predictably led to the immense violence witnessed over the past two years.
Family members of Palestinian prisoners and detainees have shared their joy at the release of their family members and friends. Israel released 1,968 people as part of a ceasefire deal with Hamas.
