NBC News did not immediately name Holt’s successor. Holt was named anchor of “Nightly News” in June 2015 after steering weekend editions of the news broadcast for eight years and co-anchoring “Weekend TODAY” for 12 years. He has served as principal anchor of “Dateline” since September 2011.

Holt has been the lead anchor of Nightly News for a decade, succeeding Brian Williams. Before taking over the weekday edition he led the weekend Nightly News and was the primary fill-in anchor when Williams was out. Holt joined NBC News in 2000, and has been contributing to Dateline since 2011.

Lester Holt announced Monday that he will step down as the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” this summer. The award-winning journalist isn’t leaving the network. He will keep a full-time role at “Dateline” where he’s been the principal anchor since 2011,
