Saigo won for the first time on the LPGA Tour. She was the tour's rookie of the year last season. The 23-year-old player is the first Japanese winner in the event and the fifth major champion. She has six victories on the Japanese tour, five in 2022.

In the end, Mao Saigo secured the first LPGA victory of her career with a birdie putt from three feet away on the playoff hole. Hyo Joo Kim, Ruoning Yin, Ariya Jutanugarn and Lindy Duncan were the other four golfers that advanced to the playoff but couldn't beat out Saigo.

Saigo was the LPGA Tour’s rookie of the year last season. The Chevron was her first victory, and she became the first Japanese winner in the event.
