Endangered Asian elephant calf ‘Kirby’ born at Houston Zoo
An endangered Asian elephant calf was born last week at the Houston Zoo. The Texas zoo said 34-year-old Asian elephant Shanti gave birth to 314-pound Kirby on November 15 at 3 p.m. CST. Shanti had been in labor for 19 hours and gave birth in the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat cow barn under the supervision of keepers and veterinary staff members.

The elephant Shanti, 34, gave birth to a 314-pound female baby named Kirby at 3 p.m., according to the Houston Zoo. Zoo officials said she was standing within six minutes, walking 25 minutes later and began nursing within an hour and a half of being born.
