Hello; My therapist of 4 years, with whom I've done I think 3 or 4 EMDR sessions that weren't extremely triggering at her office, said yesterday that I should practice the mechanics of the eye movement and then use the technique on myself at home. She said to call her if I get overwhelmed. I trust my therapist completely.

I think they are fundamentally different as anxiety connotes a mental/emotional worry and hyper-arousal seems to describe a physiological state independent of the mental state. Several months ago I was having trouble with what I eventually came to understand was nearly constant hyper-arousal.

When we perceive threat, our bodies redirect our blood flow to support intense reaction to the threat (generally to key organs and systems, away from extremities). It's part of a flight or fight response.

WEBSep 29, 2024 · I suddenly have strong anxiety in the evening. The day can be great, I go to bed everything still is great and then I turn around to try to sleep and the anxiety hits. I never had it like that before. Yesterday was the worst, I could not close my eyes despite being tired as hell, every noise made me more anxious.
